“When Demigods Court Death” by Wendy Sparrow:
As the demigod of fertility, Aster Slone has a thriving doctor’s practice. In fact, the incidence of triplets has made it too thriving. He needs more time with his neighbor the demigoddess of death to dampen his powers. Chandra Linton being gorgeous and sweet makes his task less of a hardship. Hitting the zenith of heretofore-unknown powers without enough exposure to her match is killing Chandra. Accepting all that her crazy, but hot neighbor says is her destiny…well, it muddles her convictions, but her real concern is: does Aster want Chandra because she’s the woman he desires or because she’s Death?

“These Roots Run Deep” by Em Shotwell:
Spitfire, New Orleans weather girl, Cheyanne Murphey has everything, and that is exactly how she likes it. When she discovers evidence of her fiancé’s philandering, she refuses to let her perfectly cultivated image fall to pieces. Cheyanne has worked too hard, dragging herself up from the trailer park into New Orleans’ society, to give in without a fight…even if that means trading a year of her life in exchange for a love incantation from her ancestor’s spell book.
A skyclad, moonlit dance, a mysterious potion, and magic gone awry leave Cheyanne with a very peculiar life lesson: love can take on many forms, so be careful what you wish for.

“Destiny’s Dark Light — Part One” by Sara Dobie Bauer:
In modern day Charleston, lonely white witch Cyan Burroughs has waited her whole life to lead the battle against dark witches and eventually meet the man she is fated to love. A tragic trolley accident brings Liam Cody into her life. He is her destiny, but he’s also in love with someone else. Now, Cyan and her magic family must find the dark witch who caused the accident while Cyan fights her feelings for Liam—a charming Irishman with secrets of his own.

My review:

*** I volunteered to read an advance reviewer copy of this book. ***

This was an utterly enchanting mystic-centric collection of novellas, so I find the title aptly appropriate. (I am sure the editors and publishing-house were anxiously awaiting my approval.  HA)  And although novella in length, these stories pack a punch in tale.  There is a something to be found for everyone’s personal taste in magic.

Below is the rating I give to each story and the average makes up the status of “my rating” for the entire compilation.

  • When Demigods Court Death ~ Wendy Sparrow (4.0)
  • These Roots Run Deep ~ Em Shotwell (3.5)
  • Destiny’s Dark Light, Part One ~ Sara Dobie Bauer (4.5)

Wickedly sinful, the Earl of Sussex, is an unrepentant rake. And the Wicked Earls’ Club is the perfect place for a man of his station to indulge in life. That is until his parents make a match for him. Travelling to meet his intended bride, he is convinced he must end this farce. Until he meets Lady Tabitha. A fiery wallflower equally bent on ending their engagement.

Lady Tabitha, daughter or the duke, will not be betrothed to a rake no matter what her father thinks of his social connections. As long as she doesn’t stare into the depths of his green eyes, or linger on the strong lines of jaw, she should be able to scheme her way out of this engagement. That is, if her intended groom would just cooperate in her plans.

This was a delightfully wicked and sinfully entertaining read.  The characters are witty and colorful and balance each other completely.  There is never any doubt about the ending of this tale but the journey itself is a wonderfully delicious treat.

Christmastide with my Captain, by Tammy Andresen

Christmastide with my Captain

Lady Emilia McDougal has watched love find each of her beloved sisters. When will it be her turn?

Captain Jack Andrews lost his love of the sea long ago and he doesn’t deserve to find the love of his life. Especially not with someone as stunning and kind as Emilia.

But how long can resist those tempting lips, soft smile, and heartfelt words? And what will her father, the Earl of Dunfries, do to a man like him if he does?

My review:

This was a fabulous introduction to the McDougal family and Emilia stole my heart from her first appearance.  And Jack…he certainly encapsulates everything authors want their romance lead to characterize.  I certainly appreciated the reversal that he was not good enough for her – especially in a world full of alpha-men demanding submission by their partners.  A heartwarming tale of true love; no matter the background of one’s family history.  Absolutely incendiary in sexual yearning and yet lovely and sweet in romance, this was truly a joy to experience.  The holiday only helped set the scene, not the book, so this can be read at any time of year.

Dax, by Shannyn Leah

Dax (Bad Boys of Willow Valley #1)

Dax Colyn is one of the bad boys of Willow Valley. A fearless volunteer firefighter and hard ass mechanic, he makes all the woman swoon and he likes it that way. He keeps people at a distance since his mother died. He doesn’t want to let anyone in, much less a woman he knows he could fall in love with.

Ava Anderson keeps people away, too. Haunted by her tortured past and constantly fearful of the future, it’s only her daughter Olivia and Dax’s dad Rowdy that she’s let in.

But when tragedy strikes, it pushes Dax and Ava together, forcing them both to let go of their fears. They soon learn how hard it is to keep pretending and how easy it is to let others in. Especially when those people are family.

** I volunteered to read an advance reviewer copy of this book. **

Sometimes it isn’t about the ending, but the journey to get there.  And this story encapsulates that thought beautifully.  Although technically a “clean” read, the sexual want, yearning, and power between the two leads nearly incinerates.  If all “bad boys” were this sizzling, I would carry a hose with me everywhere I go.  Emotions ranged from laughter to heartbreak to suspenseful anxiety and everything in-between.  And I enjoyed every moment of the ride.
