A Girl Named Calamity, by Danielle Lori

A Girl Named Calamity (Alyria #1)

I was a simple farm girl living in the magical land, Alyria, where men ruled and women only existed.

Call me sheltered. Call me naive. I was probably both. I never expected to be the key to Alyria’s destruction.

The journey I was on wasn’t only one to save me. But one where I had a lot of learning to do. With men. With magic. And with myself.

But I wasn’t alone. I had an escort. One I wasn’t so sure about. But one I couldn’t afford to lose and one I wasn’t so sure I could even leave.

I had many hopes. But the most important one was that my name wouldn’t become my fate.

WARNING: This novel contains blood, violence, profanity, and some sexual content.
It does end on a cliffhanger.

My review:

** I volunteered to read an advance reviewer copy of this book. **

I enjoyed this story on so many levels.  The fantasy, the magic, the non-romance romance.  Good Lord, the romance.  Aware that knowing the attraction is deadly and yet the sexual tension and lust and overall yearning was my undoing.  I got so engrossed in the story I released a verbal grunt of frustration when I realized I was at the end.  (And I usually dislike cliffhangers as “endings” but there is so much more that needs to be discovered in this story that I was oddly at peace with the ending. – After the exclamatory groan that is.  I fear my reaction had much to do with being so harshly thrown back into reality as the world I left behind was so entertaining.)  I am excited to read more about the journey and prophecy and the “what happens next” when I dive back into this world with the next in the collection.  Because there is no doubt I plan to read the rest of this series.

Jack Alagona—better known as Jackal—is the second-in-command in his wolf pack. Set in his domineering alpha ways, the wolf-shifter closed off his heart long ago when vampires took what was most precious to him.

Even though a relationship between vampires and shifters is practically forbidden, all Reason knows is that she wants Jackal with a passion she’s never felt.

And, although Reason drives him crazy in a way that he thought he wouldn’t feel again, with memories that rule his present life, Jackal can’t risk being more than friends.

Can Reason convince Jackal to let her into his heart, or will their pasts get in the way?

EXCERPT:

He arched down, grabbing my face between his callous palms, and a weird jolt of energy pulsed through me. Instead of pushing him away, strangely, the only thing I could think of was how long it’d been since I felt a man’s hands on my skin. His full focus was on me, the attention sending little tremors of awareness through me, as we stared at each other, speechless, our faces mere inches apart.

Move, Reason. Just fucking go.

My mind and body staged a mutiny by refusing to cooperate, as if daring the shifter to make another move. He did by pressing his lips against mine.

No, no, no. This will not do.

Reaching up, I slapped my hands against his wide shoulders with every intention of shoving him away. Instead, my fingers gripped him tight, pulling him closer. My lips parted before he sucked my tongue into his mouth.

Oh, baby Jesus. Why does he taste like my three favorite things—coffee, mint, and cinnamon?

FaeTAL, by Becca Moree

FaeTAL (FaeTAL Series, #2)

The Carnival of Darkness isn’t your average amusement show. It’s a sick and twisted world where men are predators and women are the prey.

Abi, one of these women, has one goal. One all-consuming need. All that she wants is to escape from the life that she is being forced to lead. She isn’t looking for love or even lust, she just wants her life back. No matter how lacking that life had been.

Christopher is the King of the Fae, whether he likes it or not. When he runs into Abi while out on patrol his natural instinct is to protect her from any and all harm, even though women haven’t been on his radar for centuries. He simply wants to be free from his burden and this promise to lead his people.

When the two come together in an unexpected and explosive night both of their lives will change forever…but will either get the freedom they are searching for?

My review:

I had to read this twice before reviewing.  I wanted to be sure I had not missed a single, perverted, macabre, freaky, moment of the nightmare inside the Carnival.  (Additionally, I got to read a fabulous supernatural story twice in one week.  Yay me!!)  This tale picks up immediate where the “Carnival of Darkness” novella finishes, so although you should read it to fully embrace the happenings, it is not a requirement to fully enjoy the horrors on the pages.  This is a seriously dark and haunting depiction of an otherworldly fascination to condescend humans.  I’m hooked on this series!

Legendary, by Laura Harvey

Legendary (Triskaidekaphilia, #1)

Urban legends. We’ve all heard them, we’ve all told them. They fill the role that fairy tales once held—morality tales meant to frighten us into sticking with the herd, obeying society’s rules, and not taking any chances. In most urban legends, once someone transgresses, we know things won’t end well for them.

But what if the bright spark of romance also common to these stories refuses to be snuffed out? What if it bursts into a love that fights for its chance to burn? Can love triumph over evil? Forgive any trespass? Heal any wound?

Set off into a dark wood with a young love that won’t go quietly into the night. Bait a vengeful ghost to find family, and love. Ride along with a hitchhiker who won’t vanish for long. Learn to love a touch that is not human. Find passion beneath the scars. Dive into five tales that speak to the heart of myth and find love that is nothing short of legend.

Featuring new stories by Sara Dobie Bauer, Wendy Sparrow, T. R. North, Aisling Phillips, and Michael Leonberger.

My review:

** I volunteered to read an advance reviewer copy of this book. **

This is truly a romantically themed suspense/thriller collection of urban legends.  Each tale brings a different skew on an urban legend.  Revenge, anguish, grief, loneliness, and fear are just some of the threads used to weave the story.  All have a romantic touch which helps drive the plot and each story has just enough reality to make you catch your breath or jump at a noise while reading.

Below is the rating I give to each story and the average makes up the status of “my rating” for the entire compilation.

  • Not Again ~ Sara Dobie Bauer (3.5)
  • She Wore White ~ Wendy Sparrow (4.5)
  • Vanishing Point ~ T.R. North (4.0)
  • La Vie en Rose ~ Aisling Phillips (4.0)
  • The Hook ~ Michael Leonberger (4.0)

Keeping Time, by Wendy Sparrow

Keeping Time (Servants of Fate Book 3)

When Ruin’s mortal sacrifice to the Fates on New Year’s Eve is already dying, it should be the easiest life he has to take, but not this year. The dying man knows Ruin is there to kill him, but he asks Father Time’s son to look after his twin sister. Ruin can’t stay away from the sweet and sensual Phoebe. His previous interactions with women changed the definition of his name, Ruin, so he can’t fall for her, especially when the lovely mortal doesn’t know he killed her brother.

Phoebe’s brother promised to send her a guardian angel, but Ruin seems too devilish to be holy. He only wants to be friends and keep watch over her, but she can’t resist him. Loving Ruin is a sin tempting her heart. How wrong is it to cause an angel’s fall? Ruin and Phoebe’s time is running out as another New Year’s Eve sacrifice approaches, and Ruin might lose everything for keeping his true hand in fate secret.

My review:

** I volunteered to read an advance reader copy. **

This was a wholesome read.  (Another installment in the series that is able to be read as a stand-alone.)  Characters that were mentioned in “Taking Time” are highlighted here in their own tale.  I embraced this storyline with open arms as it was so artfully realistic – outside the immortal and magic elements.  A pleasant and endearing escape.
