Pieces of Gray, by Kelly Moore

Pieces of Gray (4)

Would you risk your life for someone that you love? Would you risk theirs?

Gray Milby was a badass sniper in the Army. She was held captive deep in the jungles of China for two years. She left behind the only man she has ever loved believing that he was dead until now. She risks her life and others to rescue him, returning to the place where her own nightmares come from.

Captain Kell Crew has survived four years of torture, being held captive in a cage. Physically he survived, mentally he will never be the same man that Gray remembers. In order for him to survive again, she has to make the choice of giving him up once more.

A year later they accidently meet again and Kell is drawn to every part of her being. He feels he remembers Pieces of Gray, but how is that possible when he has never met her before? All he knows is that he wants her.

Gray has tried everything to move on with her life and forget about her love for Kell. He forces his way back into her life and she can no longer push him away. Her love for him is too deep. Being with him risks his own life. Their love for each can destroy them both.

Someone else is lurking out there waiting to seek revenge. He just might kill them both.

My review:

** I volunteered to read an advance reviewer copy of this book. **

This story started off at the speed of a fired bullet and never slowed.  The complete joy to heart wrenching pain in split second timing was impeccable.  Such an array of emotions depicted and expressed throughout the tale.  The sole first-person point of view was brilliant.  I felt as if I was experiencing the story events myself.  I can only fathom the depths of how close to home this may relate to those more intimately connected to the military and the changes that overtake those who go through such horrid conditions.  It may be titled “Pieces of Gray” but it left me completely shattered.

FaeTAL, by Becca Moree

FaeTAL (FaeTAL Series, #2)

The Carnival of Darkness isn’t your average amusement show. It’s a sick and twisted world where men are predators and women are the prey.

Abi, one of these women, has one goal. One all-consuming need. All that she wants is to escape from the life that she is being forced to lead. She isn’t looking for love or even lust, she just wants her life back. No matter how lacking that life had been.

Christopher is the King of the Fae, whether he likes it or not. When he runs into Abi while out on patrol his natural instinct is to protect her from any and all harm, even though women haven’t been on his radar for centuries. He simply wants to be free from his burden and this promise to lead his people.

When the two come together in an unexpected and explosive night both of their lives will change forever…but will either get the freedom they are searching for?

My review:

I had to read this twice before reviewing.  I wanted to be sure I had not missed a single, perverted, macabre, freaky, moment of the nightmare inside the Carnival.  (Additionally, I got to read a fabulous supernatural story twice in one week.  Yay me!!)  This tale picks up immediate where the “Carnival of Darkness” novella finishes, so although you should read it to fully embrace the happenings, it is not a requirement to fully enjoy the horrors on the pages.  This is a seriously dark and haunting depiction of an otherworldly fascination to condescend humans.  I’m hooked on this series!

Standby, by Brandy Ayers

Standby: WQUZ News Book 1

Mira Simpson has a plate so full it’s overflowing. A busy career as the crime reporter at WQUZ in Pittsburgh keeps her hopping with ten-hour work days. Caring for her ill father takes up the rest of her time. In the two years since his diagnosis with early onset Alzheimer’s disease, Mira hasn’t had time for a social life, certainly not for a love life. Add in an overzealous fan making trouble for her, and Mira is in a constant state of stress.

As if all that wasn’t enough, now Chris Noble, the infuriating, and infuriatingly hot, reporter from rival news station WBDD has taken over the open crime reporter position. The two clash heads in the field. But even while he is pissing her off like no other can, Noble is also turning her on. As Mira begins to let her guard down, she learns there might be more to Noble than meets the eye. Can Mira learn to trust her biggest rival? Or will she continue to put her heart on standby?

My review:

** I volunteered to read an advance reviewer copy of this book. **

The combination of professional, career, and “on-air” assignments versus private, personal, and “hidden” life situations make this an entertaining peek at the possible scenarios faced by those who work in journalism and what transpires when the lines dividing the two get crossed.  The friction and tension between the lead reporters is immediate and intense and doesn’t lessen as the story evolves.  I laughed, I grinned, and I smirked throughout their banter and quips.  This was an absolutely charming romantic suspense and a lovely start to what will be a series of stand-alone, yet interconnected, releases.

Legendary, by Laura Harvey

Legendary (Triskaidekaphilia, #1)

Urban legends. We’ve all heard them, we’ve all told them. They fill the role that fairy tales once held—morality tales meant to frighten us into sticking with the herd, obeying society’s rules, and not taking any chances. In most urban legends, once someone transgresses, we know things won’t end well for them.

But what if the bright spark of romance also common to these stories refuses to be snuffed out? What if it bursts into a love that fights for its chance to burn? Can love triumph over evil? Forgive any trespass? Heal any wound?

Set off into a dark wood with a young love that won’t go quietly into the night. Bait a vengeful ghost to find family, and love. Ride along with a hitchhiker who won’t vanish for long. Learn to love a touch that is not human. Find passion beneath the scars. Dive into five tales that speak to the heart of myth and find love that is nothing short of legend.

Featuring new stories by Sara Dobie Bauer, Wendy Sparrow, T. R. North, Aisling Phillips, and Michael Leonberger.

My review:

** I volunteered to read an advance reviewer copy of this book. **

This is truly a romantically themed suspense/thriller collection of urban legends.  Each tale brings a different skew on an urban legend.  Revenge, anguish, grief, loneliness, and fear are just some of the threads used to weave the story.  All have a romantic touch which helps drive the plot and each story has just enough reality to make you catch your breath or jump at a noise while reading.

Below is the rating I give to each story and the average makes up the status of “my rating” for the entire compilation.

  • Not Again ~ Sara Dobie Bauer (3.5)
  • She Wore White ~ Wendy Sparrow (4.5)
  • Vanishing Point ~ T.R. North (4.0)
  • La Vie en Rose ~ Aisling Phillips (4.0)
  • The Hook ~ Michael Leonberger (4.0)

Synopsis

“I bet I could make you fall in love in a week.” The offer seals Scott Russell’s fate.

After a bitter betrayal and an ugly divorce, the detective is forced to make a fresh start. His new position in a quiet suburb should be a walk in the park compared to his years in Chicago. However, he quickly learns that small towns come with their own issues, with citizens who are slow to forgive and even slower to forget.

The town’s wealthy and reclusive author is a mystery to most. To Scott, she’s just another nameless girl on the train. With a reserved smile and shoes worth more than a month’s rent, his only concern is she might be out of his league.

“I can give you seven days, but not my heart.” The acceptance is one more in a string of lies.

Celeste Smythe doesn’t believe in love at first sight. Relationships take time and sometimes even that isn’t enough. Not with the secrets she harbors in her guarded heart. Yet fate keeps pushing her toward the handsome and absurdly persistent man, and resisting may be more than she can endure, no matter the risks.

When the week is over, Scott may think he knows her. Celeste may know she loves him. But when the truth is revealed about the town’s most talked about citizen, he may discover he’s put more than his heart on the line.

Black Widow is Book One in the Black Widow Series. Each book in the three book series will release approximately 3-4 months apart.
